Professional Tax (PT) is a state-level tax applicable to individuals and businesses engaged in professions, trades, or employment. In Maharashtra, it is governed by the Maharashtra State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1975, and includes two types:

• PTEC (Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate): For businesses, professionals, and self-employed individuals

• PTRC (Professional Tax Registration Certificate): For employers deducting and paying PT on behalf of employees
